Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is surrogacy?

Surrogacy is a fertility treatment that carries a woman and gives another couple a pregnancy. This woman, the surrogate mother, may be the genetic mother of the child (as in the case of traditional surrogacy) or may be genetically unrelated to the child (called pregnancy). As part of the surrogacy agreement, she renounces all her parental rights and agrees to give the baby immediately after delivery to the intended parents. Read More

Q: What is the difference between traditional surrogacy and gestational surrogacy?

In traditional surrogacy, the surrogate's own eggs are fertilized using artificial insemination, making her the baby's biological mother. In gestational surrogacy, the surrogate becomes pregnant through in vitro fertilization and has no biological connection with the baby. Both forms of surrogacy have many advantages, disadvantages and implications to consider for intended parents.

Q: What are the chances of success with surrogacy?

Surrogacy success rates are influenced by the IVF clinic you work with, the health and viability of the embryo you use, and the history of your surrogate's health and fertility. Your fertility clinic can help you determine your best chances of successful pregnancy in your specific circumstances. In addition, most surrogacy professionals will perform multiple embryo transfers until a healthy pregnancy is achieved, making the overall success rate of surrogacy very high.

Q: What is the new law in India?

1. Surrogacy for foreign citizens is banned in India

2. Traditional Surrogacy (Using Surrogate’s eggs) is banned

3. Commercial Surrogacy is banned. Only altruistic Surrogacy is allowed in India – at present this is a bill yet not signed by President – so currently majority of IVF centers have continued to do commercial surrogacy but very soon it will be law and commercial surrogacy will be a history in India.
